The goal of rhinoplasty is to create an aesthetically pleasing nose that functions well and harmonizes with other attractive facial features. Rhinoplasty in Bel Air, MD, can also help correct breathing defects and other problems associated with nasal function that occurred either at birth or due to injury.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is often referred to as a “nose job.” A nose that is attractive on one patient may not be as attractive on another. The goal of rhinoplasty is to create an aesthetically pleasing nose that functions well and harmonizes with other attractive facial features. It is considered by the majority of surgeons to be the most difficult and humbling operation.

Dr. Sultan appreciates this greatly and approaches all of his primary and revision rhinoplasties with definitive preoperative planning under the patient’s guidance.

Rhinoplasty surgery can:

  • Narrow down flared nostrils
  • Alter the size of your nose
  • Change the angle of your nose
  • Straighten the bridge of your nose

Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is only recommended for individuals whose nasal bones are fully developed. Typically, girls can safely have a rhinoplasty performed on them for cosmetic reasons after age 15; however, boys may have to wait until after age 15, as their nasal bones may not be fully developed at that age.

If you are opting for a rhinoplasty surgery for medical reasons, you may be able to undergo rhinoplasty at a younger age, but we will take steps to closely analyze your nose to ensure that you are a good fit for the procedure before diving in.

Ideal patients are in good physical health and have realistic expectations. Poor physical health can increase the chance of complications. Non-smokers are preferred, since smoking can negatively affect the health of the tissues, prolonging the recovery process.

During your consultation in Bel Air, Baltimore, or Towson, we’ll discuss the procedure in more depth and ask questions about your medical history to make sure that rhinoplasty is a good option for you.

The Nasal-Surgery Consultation

Dr. Sultan carefully reviews every candidate who is interested in undergoing rhinoplasty surgery in Bel Air, Baltimore, or Towson. He will also discuss your medical history to ascertain your current state of health. It’s important that you’re open and honest about your medical background when talking to Dr. Sultan.

If you have any medical conditions that you suffer from, you should let Dr. Sultan knows during your consultation. If you smoke, you should stop at least six weeks before the procedure. You should also stop taking any medications that thin your blood, such as painkillers or aspirin.

Dr. Sultan will physically examine your nose and take photos to study the aesthetic changes that can be made to your nose during rhinoplasty surgery.

He will gather all the required information needed to review your candidature for rhinoplasty and then inform you whether it is safe for you to go forward with the procedure.

“Dr. Sultan has seriously impressive credentials”

5 5 Star Rating
Written on February 20, 2020

Dr. Sultan is not only a very skilled surgeon but a really great man. He created the perfect look I wanted for my nose through his endless knowledge of plastic surgery, his understanding of facial aesthetics, and my own personal preferences. Dr. Sultan has seriously impressive credentials but none compare to how caring he is towards his patients. When I was looking for a surgeon to do my rhinoplasty, I (of course) wanted a doctor who was skilled, but it was equally if not more important that they be attentive, understanding, and kind. Anyone who lives around Baltimore is lucky to be so close to a surgeon who is the perfect and uncommon combination of both aspects. After my surgery, I am more confident in my appearance and much happier in general. The process was undoubtedly difficult because of the immediate pain and recovery but all worth it in the end. I am so pleased with my results and would recommend Dr. Sultan to anyone looking for facial plastic surgery. He is truly incredible.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is a complex procedure that requires a skilled and experienced surgeon like Dr. Sultan. You will be given either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia before your procedure. This will ensure a comfortable and pain-free rhinoplasty session.

Dr. Sultan will then make small incisions on the inside of the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or the skin between your nostrils (open rhinoplasty). He will reshape the nose, making alterations to the cartilage, bone, or soft tissue as needed. He will then close the incision.

In certain cases, grafts are required during rhinoplasty surgery in order to bolster the strength of the nasal architecture. Grafts are created using cartilage from the ear, nasal septum, or ribs. They are shaped by Dr. Sultan and then carefully sewn into the area.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

You may potentially have a nasal splint placed over your nose immediately after surgery. You will most likely experience some bruising and swelling around the eyes, but cold compresses can help. These side effects usually go down after a few days but will take up longer to ameliorate. Swelling in your nose can take up to six months to fully go down.

You may also experience nasal congestion. Unfortunately, you cannot blow your nose for at least a week after the surgery, so you should ask the doctor for safe decongestants. Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin, which can worsen bleeding during recovery.

It is important to remember that each patient will recover at a slightly different rate after rhinoplasty surgery. If you have any questions or concerns about the healing process, be sure to ask Dr. Sultan.

There may also be things you cannot do after rhinoplasty, such as sleeping face down during recovery, because doing so will put pressure on the new nose. Refrain from wearing glasses, because they can cause pressure when resting on your nose. Apply sunscreen regularly.

You may be able to return to work 7 to 10 days after getting rhinoplasty, depending on whether you are cleared to do so by your surgeon. Avoid physically taxing activities like sports and heavy exercise.
