Facelift / Necklift
Conveniently located to serve Baltimore and Towson.
Facial aging often shows as loose skin, deep folds, and loss of definition along the jawline and neck. A facelift can address these changes by reducing sagging skin, lifting and tightening weakened facial and neck muscles. At Sultan Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, serving Towson, Baltimore, and Washington, DC, facelift options are selected based on facial structure, skin quality, and the areas you want improved.
What a Facelift Improves
A facelift focuses on the mid-to-lower face and neck. It can soften deep creases, reduce jowling, and restore a clearer jawline. When combined with a neck lift, results are often more balanced from the chin to the collar area.
Why do people get facelifts/neck lifts?
The natural aging process causes a loss of skin elasticity. As we are exposed to the sun and pollutants, deeper wrinkles start to form. Gravity causes the underlying facial muscles in the cheeks and neck to relax. Skin folds appear on the cheeks, and fatty tissue can appear around the neck and jowls, causing the jawline to lose its definition.
Weakened platysma muscles of the neck separate and form a “turkey wattle.” We accumulate sagging and wrinkled skin on our necks. We may also be struggling with an unwanted double chin. A facelift (rhytidectomy) and neck lift performed in our plastic surgery facility can reduce these signs of aging.
Learn MoreWhat can a facelift/neck lift do?
A facelift/neck lift can rejuvenate the face and neck by reducing sagging skin, lifting and tightening weakened facial and neck muscles, and removing excess fat beneath the skin, which smooths wrinkles. This combination procedure can reduce the look of jowls and can address persistent muscle banding in the neck.
Facelift options we offer
Deep plane facelift
A deep plane facelift repositions deeper facial layers rather than merely tightening the skin. This option is often chosen for advanced facial sagging and deeper folds. Learn more about our deep plane facelift approach.
SMAS facelift
The SMAS facelift focuses on the supportive facial layer beneath the skin. It can improve jowls and midface laxity while maintaining natural movement. Additional details are available on our SMAS facelift page.
Mini facelift
A mini facelift targets early jowling and mild skin laxity. It uses shorter incisions and is often appropriate for patients seeking subtle improvement. Visit our mini facelift page for specifics.
Which option fits me?
The best option depends on skin elasticity, facial structure, and the degree of change you want. During consultation, facial movement and tissue depth are reviewed to guide recommendations.
What Happens Before and After the Procedure
The consultation
The only way to learn if you are the right candidate for a facelift/neck lift is to have a thorough discussion with Dr. Sultan during a consultation. He will review the facelift and neck lift procedures with you in greater detail, including the recovery process.
Dr. Sultan will ask you about your complete medical history, including any medications you take and any allergies you have. He will also discuss your expectations for the procedure.
Dr. Sultan will perform a physical examination and may take pictures of your neck to study your features in detail. If he believes you are a good candidate for surgery after this, he will provide instructions for preparing for the procedure and set a date.
Featured Before & After

How to prepare for a facelift/neck lift
During your consultation, you will receive specific instructions to help you prepare for your facelift/neck lift.
You will need to quit smoking for at least four to six weeks before the procedure. Avoid drinking alcohol for at least 48 hours as well.
To prevent excessive bruising, you must stop taking anti-inflammatory medications, anticoagulants, and herbal supplements as directed before your procedure date.
The initial recovery period will require you to limit movement. Before the facelift/neck lift procedure, complete all necessary household chores. Request time off from work in advance.
Getting good-quality sleep can help facelift/neck lift patients achieve a quick, smooth recovery. To ensure you have adequate support, arrange enough pillows on the bed in advance.
On the day of your procedure, take a full bath with mild soap and shampoo, since you will need to avoid soaking in water for at least 48 hours after the surgery. This will also keep your skin and hair free of harsh chemicals before the procedure.
Procedure details
A rhytidectomy paired with a neck lift surgery may be performed on an outpatient basis. It may take several hours to complete. First, anesthesia is administered to ensure the patient’s comfort throughout surgery. The surgical plan focuses on improving the lower face, jawline, and neck in a balanced way.
Small incisions will be made around your ears and, if needed, under your chin, to provide Dr. Sultan with access to the underlying tissues. The deeper facial and neck tissues are repositioned to restore support, soften the jowls, and improve neck definition. Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is adjusted smoothly without pulling.
Once shaping is complete, incisions are closed carefully, and light dressings may be applied. You are monitored briefly before discharge and given clear aftercare instructions to support healing.
Facelift/Neck Lift Recovery
Proper aftercare can significantly affect the results of a facelift/neck lift. Carefully following Dr. Sultan’s instructions will help prevent infection and maintain the lift created during the surgical procedure.
To ensure a full recovery after a facelift/neck lift, take time off from work as directed. Desk work can typically be resumed after one week. Those with physically strenuous jobs may need to request time off for an extended period.
Wear the recommended compression garments. This will help speed up recovery, manage swelling or bruising, and reduce discomfort.
When sleeping, lie on your back and provide enough angle for your upper body, neck, and head. This will help reduce swelling.
Pain medication will also be prescribed to manage pain. Take the medication as directed by Dr. Sultan.
Avoid heavy exercise and other physically taxing activities for four to six weeks.

Benefits of Facelift/Neck Lift
A facelift with a neck lift improves the lower face and neck. Key benefits include:
- Improves jawline and neck definition by lifting sagging tissue and removing excess skin
- Softens jowls and smooths deep folds for a more balanced lower-face contour
- Restores support to the deeper facial structure, not just tightens skin
- When combined with a neck lift, it corrects neck laxity or fullness for a smoother chin-to-neck transition
- Offers longer-lasting results compared to non-surgical treatments
- Incisions are placed discreetly around the ears and hairline to minimize visible scarring
How Much Does a Facelift/Neck Lift Cost?
The total cost of a facelift/neck lift varies by patient, based on each individual’s needs. Factors we consider include the current degree of skin sagging, the corrections you’d like to make, and the overall complexity required to achieve the desired results. Dr. Sultan will develop a fully customized surgical procedure and discuss the associated cost during your consultation.
